His woodworking shop was destroyed in 1924 after the fire that began when two of his sons foolishly ignited shavings of wood. Despite the loss of wood, Ole rebuilt and soon increased his business by offering wooden toys.
During the yo-yo boom of the thirties, the factory produced so many yo-yos unsellable that the company was nearly bankrupt. Fortunately, Vejle Bank stepped in with a loan and Ole rebuilt the factory. He renamed the business Leg Godt (Danish for “play well”) to be a reflection of its new direction.
Godtfred Christiansen
Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, who helped his father transform his wooden toy business into a worldwide toy empire, passed away in his home in Billund, Denmark. He was 75.
Following the destruction of a fire in the family’s wooden toy store, Godtfred decided the company should focus on plastic toys. His brothers, Karl and Gerhardt–who had been the directors of plastic and wood product manufacturing respectively–disagreed.
On a ferry ride to the London toy fair, Godtfred was able to meet a buyer who opined that rather than creating exclusive toys, manufacturers should create a system in where sets of toys are interlocked. That led to the development of the current Lego Stud-and-tube concept, which was patent-pending on January 28, 1958.
The Kiddicraft brick
In the 1940s, a company called Kiddicraft introduced “Kiddicraft Self-locking Building Bricks”. These were hollow rectangular plastic blocks that had four studs that were placed on the top. The studs were inserted into the studs on a different block.
When Kirk Christiansen and Godtfred visited a British supplier of the first injection molding machine, the salesperson presented them with these bricks to demonstrate the type of toys that could be made using it. Kirk Christiansen, regardless of whether he knew or not that the bricks were patentable copied them and changed their name to Lego. This led to a toy empire that still makes billions of dollars today. Hilary Fisher Page committed suicide in the year 1957. She was the founder of Kiddicraft.
